Diabetes Program

The Pawnee Nation Special Diabetes Program Provides services to all Native Americans who are diagnosed with diabetes, who have a Certified Degree of Indian Blood (CDIB) card, and who live in the Pawnee area. The service area includes the cities and townships of:  Blackburn, Cleveland, Hallet, Jennings, Lone Chimney, Maramec, Pawnee, Quay, Shady Grove, Skedee, Terlton, Westport, Ralston and Yale. Prevention materials and  programs are open to everyone.

Services available at this time are:
Free Diabetic related material

  • Diabetic recipes and meal planning (approved by the American Diabetes Association)
  • Health for Native Life and Diabetes Positive Magazines ( published by Indian Health Services)

Individual Health Screenings

  • Blood pressure
  • Blood sugar
  • Weight

Diabetes Awareness Support Groups

  • Nutrition guidance, diabetic breakfast and walking teams

Blood Glucose Monitoring (Glucometers & strips), education and ongoing consultation

  • Glucometers: Bayer Contour, Bayer Breeze II
  • Test strips for Bayer Contour, Bayer Breeze II
  • Lancets, food diaries, daily log books

Incentive Programs available at this time:

  • $150 toward eyeglass prescription only if your prescription changed from the previous year, otherwise it will be every two years,
  • Prefer turn in A1c level with your eyeglass prescription, or bring glucometer in to download, we can get the A1c level from that. A1c level of <7 percent is optimal for diabetic patients.

Pending Available Funding Approved by the Diabetes Coordinator

  • Diabetic related medications not available on the IHS formulary
  • Denture assistance (must provide a demonstration of need and if funding is available)
  • Diabetic Shoes once a year for people with Medicare part A & B; Medicaid in Oklahoma will provide for diabetic supplies as well. See the Diabetes Coordinator for assistance.
