About the Food Distribution Program

The Food Stamp Act of 1977 created the Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations (FDPIR) as an alternative to Food Stamps. The program is administered at the federal level by the Food and Nutrition Service (FNS), an agency of the United States Department of Agriculture. The FDPIR is administered locally by either Indian Tribal Organizations (ITO’s) or an Agency of a State Government. The Program is intended to provide families and persons with low-income access to a more nutritious diet and to encourage better eating patterns among the nation’s children.

The Food Distribution Program is currently distributing around 84 different food items. This includes fresh vegetables, fresh fruits, and frozen meats.
